The Challenge
Houston Cox has high operational energy demands but benefits from a large and suitable roof space for solar installation. As the business consumes most of its electricity during daytime working hours, it was initially thought that battery storage would offer limited benefit, as much of the solar energy generated would be used immediately on site.
THE SOLUTION
Following a detailed site assessment, the proposed solution was an east-to-west rooftop solar PV system covering two large roof faces, with an additional smaller south-facing array on the front of the building. In total, the system consists of 155 panels with a peak generation capacity of approximately 60 kW.
Due to the size of the array, the roofing mounting manufacturer recommended incorporating an expansion gap midway along the larger section of the installation. This design consideration allows for thermal expansion on hotter days and helps minimise the risk of structural stress or warping.
The system also needed to integrate seamlessly with the site’s existing electrical infrastructure. Drawing on our extensive electrical expertise and many years of industry experience, we were able to provide several suitable integration options, ensuring the final solution was tailored to meet the customer’s operational needs.
Results
The new solar PV system allows Houston Cox to generate a significant portion of its daytime electricity on-site. Because the business operates primarily during daylight hours, much of the solar energy generated is consumed immediately, reducing reliance on grid electricity and lowering operational energy costs.
The east–west design also ensures energy generation is spread across the working day, maximising usable power for the business.
