As the UK pushes toward net zero, homeowners across Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire are increasingly pairing electric vehicle (EV) chargers with solar panels and home battery storage. In towns like Woking and Guildford, this trio—solar PV, smart charging, and energy storage—can unlock remarkable savings while lowering your carbon footprint.
Here’s how it works—and how you can maximise your investment.
1. Solar Power: Generating Free, Clean Electricity
Installing solar panels allows you to generate your own electricity during daylight hours. A well-positioned 4 kW system in the South East can produce upwards of 3,400 kWh per year, reducing your grid reliance.
Key benefits:
Significantly reduced daytime energy bills
Zero emissions while generating
Eligibility for SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) payments
2. Smart EV Chargers: Prioritising Solar-First Charging
Smart chargers like the myenergi Zappi GLO are designed to work harmoniously with your solar PV system. Instead of drawing power from the grid, Zappi can detect when your solar panels are overproducing and route that electricity straight to your car.
Smart modes include:
Eco+ Mode: Charges only when surplus solar is available
Scheduled Charging: Pair with off-peak tariffs for overnight grid charging
Grid + Solar Blend: When needed, top up solar charging with grid power
This smart scheduling ensures you're charging your vehicle at the lowest possible cost—often for free.
3. Battery Storage: Storing Energy When the Sun Isn’t Shining
Adding a home battery like a myenergui Libbi, Tesla Powerwall or GivEnergy unit allows you to store unused solar electricity for later use—especially during peak evening hours or overnight.
Battery integration benefits:
Power your home or car after sunset using stored solar
Avoid high-rate electricity prices during peak hours
Provide backup power in case of outages (depending on system setup)
4. Combined Strategy: Complete Energy Self-Sufficiency
When solar, battery, and EV charger are combined intelligently, the result is a powerful, self-contained energy ecosystem. Here's what a typical day might look like:
Morning: Charge your car with off-peak grid electricity (if needed)
Midday: Power your home and/or EV from solar
Evening: Draw from your battery, not the grid
Overnight: Use smart tariffs to charge the battery or EV at lower cost
You can also monitor everything using integrated apps that show live energy flows, system performance, and real-time cost savings.
Why It Matters for Homeowners in Surrey, Hampshire & Berkshire
These counties enjoy some of the UK’s highest solar irradiance levels. Plus, many properties have driveways and roof space, making them ideal for smart home energy installations.
Local energy prices continue to rise, but the ability to generate, store, and use your own energy puts control back in your hands.
